[Objective]To investigate the relationship of amino acid levels to metabolic syndrome by measuring serum amino acid in patients with metabolic syndrome (MS).[Methods]A total of236community residents with ages in the range of40-65were involved in this study. The data of height, weight, waist circumference, blood pressure, blood lipids, fasting glucose, HbAlc, and2h blood glucose after OGTT were collected. Fasting blood samples were also collected for32kinds of serum amino acids measured by Isotope internal standard liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Among these residents,32had MS while the others had non-metabolic syndrome (NMS group), according to the diagnostic criteria of MS from IDF(2005).[Results]MS prevalence was13.56%(32/236). Leucine, valine, alanine, hydroxyproline level in MS group were higher than those in NMS group; while Taurine level in MS group was lower than that in NMS group (all P<0.05). There was no significant difference of the other27amino acids between MS and NMS group. [Conclusions]MS is related to abnormal amino acids metabolism. Elevated level of leucine, valine, alanine, hydroxyproline and reduced level of taurine were possibly involved in MS.
