| Aim:To investigate the impact of neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by gastrectomy and postoperative complications in advanced gastric cancer patients. METHODS:We collected data of86patients with advanced gastric cancer patients who received gastrectomy from2009.9to2011.5following neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Each patient was treated with1-6courses of neoadjuvant chemotherapy. We collected the patient’s characteristics, surgery treatment and pathological classifications and evaluated the incidence, severity, type, mortality of the postoperative complications. Then we analyzed the risk factors that affect the morbidity and mortality of postoperative complications. Results:In the86advanced gastric cancer patients who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy, the overall morbidity of postoperative complications is22.1%. The incidence of Grade II or more is12.8%and the incidence of Grade III or more is4.6%. There’s no complication related death. The postoperative hospitalization time is longer in the group with complications(29.0±21.1d)than without complications (14.5±3.4d)(P<0.01). Overweight (BMI>25kg/m2) increased the incidence of postoperative complications compared to patients with BMI less than25kg/m2(p<0.05).Conclusion:It’s indicated that the regimens and cycles of neoadjuvant chemotherapy didn’t increase the incidence of postoperative complication. Overweight is a risk factor for the incidence of postoperative complication. We recommend that the patients of overweight need to be well prepared in the perioperative period and duration of surgery should be appropriately shortened. Further large-scale randomized controlled clinical trials need to be conducted to verify whether the neoadjuvant chemotherapy increase the incidence of postoperative complications. |
