Objective For scientific development and utilization of Mongolian compound medicine gurgum-7, we investigated the chemical constituents of its important component herbal drug, safflower. Methods Safflower was extracted with methanol. The extract was subjected to a variety of column chromatography (DIAION column chromatography, ODS C18column chromatography, Sephadex LH20column chromatography, MCIgel by column chromatography on silica gel column chromatography, thin layer chromatography, preparative HPLC, etc.) to give pure compounds. Results From safflower,13compounds were isolated,10of which were identified according to their physicochemical properties and spectral data as: hydroxysafflor yellow A (HSYA,1),6-hydroxykaempferol3,6,7-triglucoside (2), sucrose (3), protocatechuic acid (4), chlorogenic acid (5), kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside (6), p-coumaric acid (7),kaempferol-3-O-β-D-glucoside(8),isoquercitin(9),and8Z-decaene-4,6-diyn-1-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (10). Among these, chlorogenic acid and protocatechuic acid showed antioxidant activity.
