With the unique philosopher and writer double identity, Iris Murdoch has wona high reputation in English twentieth century literature. She uses the narrative way tointerpret her philosophical thought and moral concept in the novels. As aphilosophical novelist, her subtle deduction of the profound relationship between loveand moral makes her moral philosophy and novel narrative get an amazingcombination. In her eyes, art and morality in fact is unified, art aims at revealing themoral nature of human being, the common cornerstone of them is love. Therefore,love and moral is always the core of her moral philosophy and the eternal theme ofher literary works.The Red and the Green is a special one among the numerous novels of Murdoch.Not only for its history setting, but also its special love entanglements between thecomplicated family relationship. Murdoch integrates her profound thinking of theduplicity of Eros into the novel writing, and reveal the inauthentic forms of love andGood in the pursuing process for people. To inspire people how to get the positiveinstruction of Eros, and eventually realize their pursuit to love, to good. This paperattempts to use the moral philosophy perspective of Murdoch to analyze various kindsof inauthentic love of personae through the closed reading of text, and to dig outMurdoch’s exploration of love and moral.This thesis is mainly consists of four parts. The first chapter mainly introducesthe special identity as philosophical novelist of Iris Murdoch, the main contents ofThe Red and the Green, and the new perspective to this novel. The second chaptermainly discusses as the combination of love and desire, how do Eros affect the pursuitof love and Good in human being. This part attempts to discuss Murdoch’s personalunderstanding of the relationship between Eros and love, Eros and Good through herinheritance and development from Plato and Freud. Chapter three is the main part ofthis thesis. Based on the interpretation of the inner pursuit and love of the maincharacters, this part analyzes the various kinds of authentic love on them, and digs outthe reasons that cause theses inauthentic forms of love. To make the further revelation of the profound connection between love and moral. Based on the above analyses, thethe conclusion chapter draws the conclusion, as follow: Murdoch conveys her incisivethinking of love and moral in her novels. Love can lead people to realize their realinner pursuit only bases on the love with the attentions to other. Shift our attentionfrom selfness to otherness which can help us recognize the reality and realize ourpursuit of love and Good.
