| Hu Yuan was born in Taizhou, Northern Song. He made a great contribution to advocating the teacher’s principle, resuming the Confucianism, criticizing Buddhism and Taoism, suspecting and changing Confucian classics, setting up schools, developing education and so on. He was the famous educator and pioneer of Confucian philosophers. Hu Yuan was born in a bureaucratic family with deep cultural background. Because of his great ambition, he went to Mount Tai to pursue knowledge at his youth and stayed there for ten years. He devoted himself to education when he had finished study. During his teaching time, he came up with a teaching thought---"Ming Ti Da Yong" and originated a new teaching method---special methods course. The teaching thought and method hade a great impact in Song dynasty and even in education in ancient China. In the aspect of academic, Hu Yuan’s main contribution was a book named Zhou Yi Kou Yi which was compiled by his student named Ni Tian yin. At first, Hu Yuan summarized the book’s purpose in simple and clear words. The purpose is to have a good knowledge of the unity of heaven and human which was in order to understand the ways of the world. Then, Hu Yuan interpreted Zhou Yi by the Confucian principles. He was the first person who had done that in Song dynasty. Meanwhile, he didn’t abandon the image-number Yi ology. He used both to interpret Zhou Yi. At last, Hu Yuan suspected and changed the Confucian classics and interpreted them in his own thought. What he had done initiated a new atmosphere about suspecting and changing the Confucian classics and also enriched the academic content in Song dynasty. He tried to unity the heaven and human and emphasized to train noble character. What he had done knocked at the door of neo Confucianism and also made him to be pioneer of the neo Confucianism. The main characteristic of Hu Yuan’s thought system was "Ming Ti Da Yong". The education thought was the outside and the Confucian classics were the inside. They both influenced each other. The Confucian classics were the roots and the education thought was the branch. Hu Yuan had two positions, one was scribe and the other was educator. The famous scribe status favored his educator status. The outstanding education achievement consolidated his scribe status. Although he had thousands of students, most of them didn’t have many theoretical works to leave for later generations. The reason is that they were more to be doers. That was a big pity for later generations to spread Hu Yuan’s thought. |
