A Rearch On The Connection Of EGP And ESP In Higher Vocational Colleges

Higher vocational education can bring up the first line of advanced technology-based, application-oriented professionals for production, technology, service, management, who are responsible for the production line management and technical guidance and their quality level has a direct relationship to their production efficiency. With economic globalization speeding up and China’s accession to the WTO, all walks of life have a higher demand on the language skills, which objectively requires that vocational English language teaching should not only lay a solid language foundation, but also focus on training students actual ability of using language. According to the "College English Teaching Basic Requirements (for trial implementation)", vocational English teaching is divided into two phases:first, the foundation stage, namely EGP stage (English for the General Purposes), Second, the professional stage, namely ESP stage (English for Specific Purpose). Therefore, the relationship of the two stages is complementary, EGP is the basis of the ESP, ESP is the sublimation of EGP. In this background, the connection of EGP and ESP teaching is a suitable teaching mode.So, firstly this paper outlines the objectives and current situation of higher vocational English teaching, meanwhile the author finds that vocational English teaching has some problems,such as unclear teaching objectives, lack of teachers, the messy teaching materials, outdated teaching methods, lack of teaching evaluation and simple learning motivation, which is bad for cultivating high-level Vocational talent proficient both being good at professional business and strong foreign language communication skills. And which is also a bottleneck for Vocational English teaching Development. After analyzing the problems and causes of vocational English teaching, the author proposes a connection of EGP and ESP teaching mode. In order to more clearly illustrate the scientisficity and necessity of the connection, the author analyzes and discusses from three aspects:the definition of both EGP and ESP, training target of higher vocational education as well as the interaction of the teaching and learning. The author also put forward to the connection principles.Then combining with "Analysis Report of Social Survey about College ESP Teaching, the author explains that ESP knowledge plays a key role in students’ employment, the employment units also have a strong desire for higher level vocational talents who are both good at professional business and foreign language communication. Then questionairing the students,2010grade of Henan Technical College of Constuction, who use Archtecher English ESP book, the author summarize the feedback information and analyze that students who have a strong knowledge of ESP can improve their self- motivation to learn, help them solve problems in the workplace, and pave the way for their future work.The connection EGP and ESP teaching model will become the mainstream, so from where we should convergent and how to solve it, the author proposes eight ways: curriculum convergence, the convergence of the course content, the convergence of teaching sector, the convergence of the teaching faculty, the convergence of teaching materials, the convergence of teaching evaluation, the convergence of teaching mode and use of the network.In short, the author analayzes the students’ feedback report combining with" Analysis Report of Social Survey of College English ESP Teaching" and Analysis Report of the Archtecher English Using and actively explore the ways and connection,hoping that can have a positive way to other EGP and ESP teaching practitioners and researchers. More importantly, the author hopes that this paper can draw the education sector and the academics’attention and truly reflect the teaching principles of higher vocational colleges:Practical and Sufficient. So that we can culture more and more higher level talents being good at professional business and foreign language communication skills, who can better response to economic globalization and international competition.
