In2009, the Office of Chinese Language Council International (Hanban) launched the new Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) according to the Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages on the basis of latest research achievements on language test in recent years and original advantages of HSK. The written examination part of the new HSK is divided into six levels. In the aspects of question types, the listening and reading part are kept the same with the former HSK. There is no special grammar questions and comprehensive filling but a writing part is added. The new HSK emphasizes more on testing the application capability of Chinese on the basis of words.According to above information, the research scope of the paper is the level3and4HSK, and the contents for the research is the gap filling in the reading part of level3and4HSK. Level3and4HSK belong to the intermediate level. In this stage, the learner focuses on the accumulation of vocabulary and the learning of grammars. Therefore, the gap filling is the key question type for vocabulary in level3and4HSK. Since the new HSK is launched for a short time, the formation and design of test questions are not familiar to people. The paper will comprehensively explain the published20sets of past exam papers in level3and4on the basis of the language testing theory. Then it starts from aspects such as word property, subject contents etc. to analyze the gap filling, to research the propositional form, vocabulary difficulty degree and the classification situation of topics of the gap filling for new HSK exam papers, to judge if vocabulary in the exam paper is in line with the Outline of Chinese Vocabulary Classes, if it is identical with utilization frequency of modern Chinese vocabulary and if the selection of corpus of exams are universal and diversified. At last, it compares the gap filling of the past exam paper and simulation paper for level3and4HSK. By the research, it is hoped to gain specific information on the question type of gap filling for level3and4new HSK to fill the vacancy of new HSK exam questions.
