Different from the fact that previous researchers have just overall studied theelder’s negative emotional experiences and regulation strategies, developmentpatterns between the elder’s experiences and their emotion regulation strategies ofanger or sadness as well as their relationships with sense of subjective well-beingwere investigated in this paper, hoping to improve their subjective well-being andprovide new perspectives for successful aging, from the perspective of emotionalexperience and regulation. There are144old people who have been investigated by self-compiled typicalevents to solve daily problems and Memorial University of Newfoundland Scale ofWell-being (MUNSH) in this research,72of them males,72females, who are dividedinto three group, that is, early old age (50to59years old), middle old age (60to69years old), and late old age (70to78years old). The results are as follows,(1)It can be seen that there exists differences not in age but in gender fromthree groups of the elder’s experience of sadness, that is, there will be more womenthan men experiencing sadness in late adulthood. On the contrary, there existdifferences not in gender but in age from their experience of sadness. Furthermore, there exist no differences in both early and middle adulthood, but older and older, theelder experience less anger after their middle adulthood. The elder experience moreanger in late old age than in early or middle old age.(2)Subjective well-being, which is different in gender and age, appears higherin middle or late old age than in early old age, and men’s is higher than women’s.(3)In addition to the instrumental strategy, passive and proactive strategies, which are the others in three types of sad emotion regulation strategy, both existdifferences in age. Furthermore, passive strategy is more used in middle or late oldage than in early, and proactive strategy is less used in late old age than in early ormiddle.(4)Similarly, in addition to the instrumental strategy, passive and proactivestrategies, which are the others in three types of angry emotion regulation strategy, also exist differences in age. Furthermore, passive strategy is more used in late old age than in early, and proactive strategy is more used in late old age than in early ormiddle.(5)Passive emotion regulation strategy of sadness and proactive emotionregulation strategy of anger are remarkably related to subjective well-being, whichcan effectively predict their usage.
