A Report On The Translation Of The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg

The translation mission is The Man that Corrupted Hadleyburg by Mark Twain. Thestory happened in a town called Hadleyburg which was very well-known by its honesty. Itmainly tells that a stranger went to Mrs. Richards’ home and left a sack of gold to express hisgratitude to his benefactor. There were some citizens who were called themselves thatbenefactor, some of whom were principal. At last, they were laughed at. The novel consistsof four chapters. There are more than18000words in the novel, which is translated bymyself. The novel consists of four chapters, and the author chooses the first two chapters andthe first half of the third chapter of the novel.In the process of translation, the author adopts Yan Fu’s translation principle of“Faithfulness, Expressiveness and Elegance” as a guidance. Faithfulness means that theversions must be coincident with the meanings from the originals, without distorting,omitting, increasing and decreasing. Expressiveness means that the versions must be clearand fluent, but not stick to the originals too much. Elegance means the versions must fit forthe styles of the originals. What’s more, some other translation strategies are used.This paper consists of three parts, including the original, the translation and thetranslation report, which is made of five sections.The first section is the introduction of the translation mission, which makes a briefintroduction of the source, the requirements of the translation, the original and the author.What’s more, the old version is analyzed and compared with the new one,andThe second section talks about the process of the whole translation, including thepreparation, the procedure and the revision. In the preparation, the author studies the writer,the style, the background and language features and etc. Meanwhile, the author picks out the translation tools. According to the preparation, the author uses Yan Fu’s translation principleof “Faithfulness, Expressiveness and Elegance” and other translation strategies in theprocedure. After translating, the author revises again and again to guarantee the quality of thetranslation.The third section is analysis of cases. Under the guidance of Yan Fu’s translationprinciple of “Faithfulness, Expressiveness and Elegance”, together with the features of theliterature translation, the author extracts and analyzes some cases. The typical cases containthe transformation of the voice and the word order, exact expression and other translationstrategies.The forth section summarizes the reflections from the aspects of the essence of theliterature translation, the translators’ qualities and deficiencies. In terms of the translator’squalities, the language skills, professional ethics, encyclopedic knowledge and the ability ofusing the internet are particularly discussed.The last section is a summary about the translation report.This translation task plays a great role during my study of MTI, and it not onlyimproves the author’s translation, but makes the author benefit a lot by writing thetranslation report.
