Chen Mingzhi(08.1925—04.2009) is a famous music educator, theorist andcomposer in Modern China. He devotes all his life to researching and educating aboutpolyphonic theories and skills, which brings fabulous achievements in these fields.It, Preludes and Fugues, is the best presentation of Chen Zhiming’s years ofresearch in composition of polyphonic music in which he combines composing skillsof modern western with Chinese national musical elements. Preludes and fugues thatbelong to western polyphonic music are brought to produce a chemical reaction withpentatonic mode in Chinese music, which finally create that polyphonic work ofChinese style.This dissertation begins by introducing Chen Zhiming’s background, followingwith specific analyzing on this work’s musical structure, performance skills andmusical processing. In order to improve the practice of piano education, thedissertation captures a systematic picture about the music style and performance wayof Chen Zhiming’s polyphonic work.
