Self-esteem is a factor that has an important effect on social anxiety. A number of studiessuggested that low self-esteem is the key factor of mental problems, but the relationship betweenhigh self-esteem individuals seems to be more complex. The high self-esteem individuals showingsome different even opposite situations, some kinds of high self-esteem individuals have no problemon interpersonal situations, but some others showing the problems like social anxiety and socialavoidance. This research is use the relationship between self-esteem and social anxiety as thebackbone, investigate the connection between four kinds of self-esteem structure and social anxiety,visit into several other major factors which is affecting social anxiety at the same time, verify andfurther study on the important impact of self-esteem on social anxiety, and investigate themechanism of action among variables effected on social anxiety.This research take implicit self-esteem, explicit self-esteem as the norm to differentiate fourkinds of self-esteem structures, first examine the IAT designed by myself to prepare for further study,research II mainly studied the relationship between four kinds of self-esteem structure and socialanxiety, research III is based on the first and research II, including two factors that have importanteffect on social anxiety--fear of negative and positive evaluation, further studied the importantinfluence of self-esteem on social anxiety, and investigate the mechanism of action among variableseffected on social anxiety.The results found:(1) there are significant correlations between explicit self-esteem, implicitself-esteem and social anxiety.(2) There is a significant difference among high and low explicitself-esteem and the high and low implicit self-esteem on social anxiety.(3) There are also significantdifferences among four kinds of self-esteem on social anxiety, while the high explicit high implicitself-esteem (secure HSE) got a significantly lower score than the other three groups on social anxiety.There is a significant difference in the high self-esteem group, show as the high explicit high implicitself-esteem group (secure HSE) got a high score on social anxiety, whiles the high explicit lowimplicit self-esteem group (fragile HSE) got a low score.(4) There is a significant correlationbetween any two of explicit self-esteem, fear of negative evaluation, fear of positive evaluation and social anxiety, but implicit self-esteem got no significant correlation except with social anxiety.(5)Explicit self-esteem got a negative correlation between fear of negative evaluation and fear ofpositive evaluation, which means low self-esteem individuals fear of both negative and positiveevaluations judged by others.(6) Self-esteem not only affects social anxiety directly, but also affectsocial anxiety through fear of negative evaluation and fear of positive evaluation, which means fearof negative evaluation and fear of positive evaluation play an intermediary role between self-esteemand social anxiety.
