With the deepening of the Open-up to the World policy, Tourism, as a core of thethird industry, has been playing a more and more important role in GDP. Particularly inthe year of2009, Chinese government has put forward a slogan,“establishing the city byTourism” and “establishing the Province by Tourism”, the role of Tourism isunprecedentedly important. Meanwhile, the people involved in Tourism have quitedifferent inner qualities, and those who can lead foreign tour groups are fewer and fewer,therefore, the concerns over oral English abilities have aroused great interests amongteachers and educators. Due to the influences of traditional teaching models, the students’oral English abilities just remained in the primary stage; most of them can not expresstheir ideas clearly and fluently. As a student of Tourism Department, their oral Englishabilities demand improvement urgently.The author has chosen61students from Tourism Department of Hebei VocationalForeign Languages Colleges, as the subjects.31of them are from Class One,2009, as theexperimental class, the others from Class Two,2009are the control class. In the formerclass, Communicative Approach is mainly used, on the contrary, traditional teachingmethods just remained in the latter. The questions in this thesis are as follows:Whether or not can CLT effectively improve the students’ speaking competence?How can the CLT be effectively carried out in the tourism department?How can the students’ oral English abilities be effectively improved?Questionnaires, interviews, classroom observations, pretest and post test are used inthis research. The12-month experiment proved that Communicative Approach is reallyeffective for the students to improve their oral English proficiency.
