This thesis is intended to probe into Egdon Heath in British writer Thomas Hardy’s works. From the pespective of ecocriticism, the author makes a new point to interpret Hardy’s works, concerns about the numerous and complicated variations of man and nature’s relationship, advocates the idea of ecological holism, and digs the implied ecological thoughts in the works. This thesis has three chapters. By studying the image of Egdon Heath, the first chapter explores and analyses the inner life value and individual existential significance of Egdon Heath, the primitiveness and human nature’s characterization of this image, and the great power of Egdon Heath, in order to expound that Egdon Heath is an independent existence, and the ecological ideas contained in the image. The second chapter discusses about human and nature’s relationship beneath the mysterious magic "metaphor" of Egdon Heath. People who return to Egdon Heath, or escape from Egdon Heath, both will be affected and manipulated by the giant magic of Egdon Heath, which expresses Hardy’s wise thought of the reconstruction of the relationship between man and nature. In the third chapter, by looking into the ideal eco-map of Egdon Heath in Hardy’s works, the author shows that nature is the shelter of human’s spirit, shows the incomplete harmony between "son of nature" and Egdon Heath, and shows the moving scene of the harmony between man and nature, in order to trace out Hardy’s ideal realm of harmonious coexistence between human and nature. With the worsening global ecological problems, interpreting literary works from the pespective of ecocriticism has an important significance. Through the interpretation of Hardy’s works, the author mines for the ecological wisdom of Hardy, and shows Hardy’s consideration of ecological problems. It has grent value and significance for us to establish the correct ecological view, reconstruct the harmonious environment, and rethink the relationship between human and nature.
