| Jack London (1876-1916) is a world-known author during the history of modernAmerican literature in the late19thcentury and the early20thcentury and also one ofthe most popular foreign authors among Chinese readers as well. Since his writingswere introduced to China during the1920s, they have reached an extensive readershiptill now. As translation and introduction model is being conducted on a larger scale, study on the author himself and his writings has already been in full swing. However,it mainly focuses on a number of his well-known works like The Call of the Wild, TheIron Heel and The People of the Abyss; his writings were reduced to neglect anddegradation from1910to1916to a large extent. Therefore, it is deemed as inadequateto make an objective evaluation from an overall perspective, thus affecting receptionof his writings in China. Taking California as the background, Jack London producedthe pastoral trilogy, including Burning Daylight, The Valley of the Moon and The LittleLady of the Big House, which have been successively introduced to China following1950s. Based on literature review, the thesis author has found that study on hispastoral trilogy mainly focuses on its literary values, rather than its translation andintroduction model. In particular, professionals’ comment on it plays a key factor inaffecting its reception in a translated situation. In this way, the thesis shall make adetailed summary of its publication and features of its Chinese versions in terms ofpreface and postscript and language style with a descriptive study and case study. Most important of all, the thesis shall analyze how comments of professionals, including critics and reviewers, affect its reception domestically. It shall beinvestigated from three aspects: how the mainstream ideology abandons the pastoraltrilogy in the early stage of the PRC, how Burning Daylight is published underideological suppression of the time and how several publishing houses try to advanceits publication since the reform and opening-up. However, professionals prove to bedeviated from great efforts of publishing houses, which affects its reception badly to alarge extent. |
