The Empirical Analysis Of Faithfulness And Elegance In EST Translation From The Perspective Of Adaptation Theory

The economic globalization pushes forward China’s international economic development in science and technology. Faced with the flourishing of China’s sci-tech enterprises, China should root in domestic development as well as keep peace with the advanced achievements in international science and technology. The EST translators have obtained the opportunity and platform as well as the huge challenges. It has become the life-long tasks for the EST translators to adapt to the bilingual linguistic structures and transfer the maximal information initiatively exposed to cross-cultural barriers and differences.Dynamic Adaptation Theory, as one of the pragmatic theories, has been widely applied into the literal translation and advertisement translation owing to its powerful explanation capacity. However, it is not closely related with EST translation, which is constrained by the serious style features in the requirement of strictness and logicality. This paper is based on the stylistic features of EST. What’s more, the author combines the EST features with the four investigation angles in Adaptation Theory with the large amount of empirical analysis, listing the EST translation techniques in the micro level. In the meantime, the empirical analysis in the thesis becomes the creative points providing the practical possibility for the problem-solving strategies in EST translation.The thesis is composed of five chapters. Chapter One is introduction, including the background, significance and organization of the thesis. Chapter Two is literature review. Firstly, the author gives the brief analysis to the historical evolution and theoretical situation of EST and Adaptation Theory home and abroad, paving the solid basis for the further creative study and investigation. Secondly, the author summarizes the framework of Adaptation Theory, i.e. the choice making theory, three language properties and four angles of investigation. In Chapter Three, the definition, classification and characteristics of EST are listed as the stylistic standards of the further study. Chapter Four is the main body of the thesis. Firstly, EST translation criteria are discussed. The author holds that the certain degrees of contextual adaptation based on faithfulness will be the touchstone to the realization of elegance. In addition, based on the empirical study, the author holds that the EST translation should have the appropriate adaptation to the word selecting, sentential arrangement and discourse coherence by the use of cohesive devices in the contextual correlates of adaptation, structural correlates of adaptation, dynamics of adaptation and salience in adaptation. At last, the author raises the problem-solving strategies from the perspective of translators’qualification, translationese and contextual sensitivity, paving the way for the smoothness of cross-cultural communication. Chapter Five summarizes main findings, limitations of this thesis and suggestions for further study.
