China is crowned as a kingdom of poetry. It is known to all that Tang Poems lay an emphasis on poems’ style while Song Lyrics focus on the pursuit of the beauty on rules and forms of classical poetic composition. And Yuanqu Poems take rhymed metrical pattern as its ultimate goal. These three forms of literary works are evolved into the three heights in the course of the Chinese literary history. Yuanqu Poems, as the highest achievement in the Yuan Dynasty, although the poems can not be compared with Tang Poems in number and with Song Lyrics in the rules of poetry composition, because of the unique artistic techniques, could also rank with these styles of the literary genre, which proved its special charming to readers. What’s more, the transfer of fuzzy aesthetics of poems has become a key point for translators since ancient times. Compared with Tang Poems and Song Lyrics, the translation of Yuanqu Poems is considered so difficult that most scholars reckon such kind of poems as untranslatable literary forms. Yuanqu Poems, because of the specialty, still holds sway over the literary circle and plays a significant role in the transmission of our splendid culture; therefore, the translation of Yuanqu Poems becomes more important.This paper, which studies from the perspective of fuzzy aesthetics and takes Professor Zhou Fangzhu’s An English Translation of200Yuanqu Poems as a case study, tries to study the conveying and detaining methods in translation process in terms of fuzzy beauty produced in form level, phonological level, imagery and artistic conception. Thus, this paper, through the analysis of this case study, aims at analyzing the reappearance of fuzzy beauty in translated versions and then endeavors to explore and summarize the major skills used in the translation. And finally this paper concludes some principles for the transmission of fuzzy beauty in Yuanqu Poems. It is hoped that more scholars will catch their eyes upon the study of fuzzy aesthetic theory and generate more public discussions in the future so that this kind of study can enrich the connotation of translation studies and promote the cultural exchange between eastern and western world. This thesis, by employing the methods of literary analysis and quantitative research, analyzes the translation of Yuanqu Poems from the perspective of fuzzy aesthetics theory and takes its core at finding out some relevances between fuzzy aesthetics and translation studies on the textual analysis of An English Translation of200Yuanqu Poems. Based on determining the relations of the two subjects, it is hoped that disciplines in passing fuzzy beauty in translation be generalized and some useful guidances and breakthrough points be explored for translation activities. Up till now, the studies on translation of classical Chinese works are excessive while researches on Yuanqu poems and the translation of Yuanqu Poems from the perspective of fuzzy aesthetics are few. This thesis studies the translation of Yuanqu Poems from the perspective of fuzzy aesthetics, which is also the innovational point of this paper.Firstly, Chapter One states briefly the research background, significance and necessity of this paper, the research objectives, methodology and organization of this paper.Secondly, Chapter Two summarizes the literature reviews of the studies on Yuanqu Poems and the translation of Yuanqu Poems at home and abroad. A brief introduction of Professor Zhou Fangzhu and his contribution to the translation of Yuanqu Poems will also be included in this part. The author tries to find the close relationship between Yuanqu Poems and fuzzy aesthetics. At the end of this Chapter, the theoretical significance of fuzzy aesthetics towards translation is put forward to bring in the theoretical framework.Thirdly, Chapter Three makes an analysis of the operational framework of this thesis:fuzzy aesthetics. Based on the analysis of fuzzy beauty and aided by examples of the translation of Yuanqu Poems, associations between fuzzy aesthetics and translation of Yuanqu Poems are hoped to be summarized to promote the internationalization of the Yuanqu Poems.Then Chapter Four focuses on the analysis of reproduction of fuzzy beauty in Professor Zhou’s translation. This part initially discusses the special aesthetic value of fuzzy beauty in the translation of Yuanqu Poems and then tries to explore the determinants that might cause fuzziness in translation. Besides, reproduction of fuzzy beauty in Professor Zhou’s translation will be expounded in detail. By exploring translated version from this perspective, important strategies are summarized to help readers have a better understanding of the translated text.Finally, Chapter Five makes a summary and presents limitations and implications of this study for readers. Additionally, suggestions for further researches are also touched upon in this chapter.Based on fuzzy aesthetic theory and took An English Translation of200Yuanqu Poems as a case study, the author reckons that fuzzy aesthetics indeed has a significant role in guiding classical works, especially Yuanqu Poems; What’s more, the translation strategies suggested by Professor Zhou should also be cherished and put into translation practice.
