The Song lyric is a particular genre of Chinese classical poetry andis characterized by its own artistic appeals and aesthetic features whichalways suffers a loss during C-E translation. And the crucial reason forthat is the ablation of artistic conception. As the heart of Chinese poetry, artistic conception is where the core aesthetic quality of the song lyric lies. However, as far as the study on C-E translation of the song lyric isconcerned, there are rarely studies directly toward artistic conception.Fuzziology originated in the1960s when Zadeh proposed his fuzzysets theory. Fuzziology studies fuzziness and considers fuzziness as apervasive attribute of the world, human cognition and language. Fuzzyaesthetics is one of the subfields of fuzziology, whose main concern fallsinto the aesthetic values of fuzziness and whose theoretical foundationlies in the essential idea of taking beauty as something fuzzy. Sinceartistic conception is generated upon the experience of aesthetic subjectwhich is fuzzy and subtle, it is feasible to observe artistic conception fromthe perspective of fuzzy aesthetics. The thesis conducts a macro and qualitative analysis on artisticconception and its generating mechanism from the perspective of fuzzyaesthetics, and observes the common aesthetic characteristics of theartistic conception in song lyrics. Then it adopts a descriptive approach toanalyze the classic song lyrics and its several English versions whichrepresent certain types of fuzziness, so as to make a comparative anddetailed study on the manipulation of fuzziness embedded in differentlanguage levels as well as the effect of reconstruction of artisticconception in translation process. The thesis has the expected conclusions that from the perspective offuzzy aesthetics, the artistic conception of the song lyric is generatedupon the fuzziness embedded in certain language structures which causesthe aesthetic subject to perceive them in an overall way, that fuzziness liesin different layers of language from phonetic level to textual level, andthat due to the radical difference between Chinese and English inaesthetic values and form, every translation process is a constantlydynamic process in which the translator is required to make the best of hissubjectivity and artistic creativity and to flexibly choose the appropriatetranslation methods in every move so as to reserve the original appeal ofartistic conception as much as possible.
