As an important way of foreign exchange, publicity translation has played an indispensable role in the increasingly frequent exchanges among different regions and countries. In the current background of globalization, with the constant development of economic globalization, cultural globalization has gradually become a trend. It is a great opportunity for China, such an ancient civilization with a history of more than5000years, to be involved in the process of globalization. For long, China has longed to open its door to the world and let people all over the world know more about it. Under such circumstances, publicity is no doubt the most effective means to introduce China to the world. Moreover, as one of the most important channels of publicity, publicity translation has begun to display its unique value and accordingly attracted much attention in the field of translation. It is no exaggeration that without translation, little publicity can be accomplished to assist the outside world in approaching China; in turn, China can hardly be understood in an all-round way by the world and it is hard to achieve the expected effects of strengthening China’s national soft power and promoting China’s national image. Nevertheless, it has to be pointed out that globalization has brought some new challenges for publicity translation as well.Publicity translation introduces the political, economic and cultural information about China through various media, and whether the translation of the information is appropriate will exert a direct influence on China’s national image. In the fierce competitions in the world today, to set up an image of a great responsible power, China must strengthen its publicity and perfect its publicity translation work to make the information about China understood and recognized by foreign readers. This requires publicity translation workers to always bear in mind that they are the cross-culture envoys who are responsible for the glorious mission of cross-culture exchange and communication. Firstly, they should be familiar with the political, economic and cultural information about China, which is the basis of their publicity translation work. Apart from this, they should also improve themselves in a series of publicity translation practice. And finally, they can introduce information about China objectively and truthfully to the whole world. As a newly emerged field in translation studies, with our development in publicity, publicity translation has achieved great progress recently. However, compared with other fields in translation studies, due to its lack of systematic theoretical guidance, the development of publicity translation has greatly fallen behind China’s rapid growth of national strength and international influence. Based on Professor Lv Jun’s constructive translatology, the author conducts a detailed analysis on publicity translation with a case study of the English translation China Today.In this thesis, apart from analyzing the current situation of publicity translation in China, the author also focuses on explaining related terms of publicity translation, the characteristics and tasks of publicity translation. The author points out that publicity translation is generally an audience-oriented translation activity, aiming at introducing China truthfully to the world, enhancing China’s discourse power in the world and establishing a good image of China. In the body of this thesis, the author conducts a detailed case analysis and puts forward some suggestions on the problems in the translation. Finally, the author sincerely hopes that this study can play a part in drawing enough attention to publicity translation.
