The PuGuang gas purification plant is an important guarantee for China’s energy artery "East Gas Transmission" project. The large bulk sulfur storage device is the first one in China. The annual production capacity of2.4million tons of sulfur.5000m3liquid sulfur tank is the key device of both sulfur storage and transportation system. And it also is the difficulty of the operation and management.The applicability analysis is a method to study whether a device with defects should continue to be used and how to use. Applicability analysis of the liquid sulfur tank can effectively determine the corrosion, the reliability of the device, help to put forward specific corrosion control technology, put forward experience and theoretical support to high sour gas purification plant liquid sulfur storage device construction. In this paper, the study achieved the following results.(1) PuGuang purification plant sulfur storage device on-site research has been made, analysis the sulfur storage device corrosion control weaknesses, determine the corrosion of the sulfur-containing media device is the main reason for the failure of the device. Detection different process areas of corrosion coupons found the sulfur storage device corrosion highlight, focus on the liquid sulfur tank applicability analysis.(2) Macro-tank testing, wall thickness ultrasonic testing, manhole weld thickness measurement detection has been made based on the corrosion mechanism. The test results verify the corrosion mechanism:uniform corrosion mainly in the lower part, localized corrosion in the upper part; corrosion of the tank vapor space is more severe than the liquid space; tank wall corrosion showing increasing trend from the bottom of the extent of corrosion; most corroded area is at the edge of the plate in the top of the tank;.(3) The structure analysis of liquid sulfur tank with uniform corrosion has been made with the finite element software, the maximum hoop stress is in the second layer of the ring plate. Based on the third strength theoretical, tank wall stress has been checked, stress check passed. Development of localized corrosion in the upper part of the tank wall influences the reliability of the tank, based on the principle of extreme value distribution, parts of the tank localized corrosion pit depth maxima and corrosion allowance were acquired.(4) Storage tank heat transfer analysis with FLUENT software calculated the distribution of temperature in the tank, tank temperature drop after cold air purge process, the tank temperature changes after the failure of heating device. The study showed that in the purging process the existing tank heating system can’t guarantee that the vapor space is maintained at the above temperature which is conducive to corrosion control;(5) PuGuang purification plant large liquid sulfur tank concrete corrosion control measures have been put forward, which helps to solve the storage tank management problem.
