Porgy and Bess is the first American folk opera conceived by an American composer Gershwin, which is also the most representative musical of Gershwin. In this opera, he presented the life of small fry on the stage, melt recreational elements into the opera properly, wrote good music to fully display the thoughts and feelings of ordinary people with jazz materials and blended the inherent music language and unique musicality of Americans into this opera after absorbing and applying the jazz and folk music materials in the United States.This thesis has five parts. The first chapter introduces the composer George Gershwin as well as his music creation genre and style. The other four chapters explore the creative background, plots and music features of Porgy and Bess, the characterization of Bess as well as the music reflection of the main characteristics of Bess. It focuses on the analyses of the characterization of Bess and the body of music, and also analyses how to better understand the impact of character changes on the type changes of singing. Finally, it summarizes the practical significance of the opera Porgy and Bess in the Conclusion part.
