| Qingzhou city in Shandong province is an area where the Buddhism has prevailed since ancienttime. The religion flourishes in the area with various activities such as grotto excavations, templeconstructions, Scripture transcriptions and statue carvings. In recent years, with the discovery of agood quantity of Buddha in Qingzhou, more attention from academia is paid to the area. However,intensive studies into this subject stay rare. For Qingzhou is one of the significant sites forBuddhism grottoes in Shandong province, more in-depth studies on the grottoes of the area as anindependent subject is of great importance.This paper mainly summarizes and analyses the style of the grottoes in Qingzhou areaconstructed in the Sui Dynasty and the reason it forms based on the previous research in academia.The study regards the grottoes as a whole and take into consideration the political and culturalbackgrounds of the Sui Dynasty and the earlier times, the religion belief at that time, as well as thegrottoes constructions in Northern Qi Dynasty, Northern Zhou Dynasty and Southern Dynasty.The paper consists of four parts:â… The historical cultural backgrounds and the basic conditions of the Tuoshan grottoes andYunmen grottoes.â…¡ The characteristics and styles of Tuoshan grottoes and Yunmen grottoes analysed throughthe comparison with other grottoes in the Sui Dynasty.â…¢ The origin of the styles of Tuoshan grottoes and Yunmen grottoes based on the study of theelements of the two sites.â…£ The value of Tuoshan grottoes and Yunmen grottoes and the influences they have on thesurrounding regions.The paper pays most attention to the comparison and analysis of the elements in theconstruction of Tuoshan and Yunmen grottoes,and explores their styles,characteristics and theorigins, so as to elaborate the way Qingzhou grottoes absorb foreign characters and form their ownmanners and the influences they have on the later grottoes. |
