Inheritance And Innovation Of The Qinhuai Lantern

Qinhuai lanterns, which has a long history, is one of the most representative folk arts in Nanjing area. With assorted varieties, selective production materials and exquisite craftsmanship, it has a strong local folk style and native flavor of Nanjing. Early in the period of Ming and Qing Dynasty, Qinhuai lanterns enjoy the reputation as the NO.1lantern. Qinhuai exhibit of lanterns attracts more tourists from both home and abroad today owing to its increasing scales and forms. In the process of inheritance, folk artists not only inherit the traditional and exquisite craft, but also use modern materials gradually. The usage of modern science and technology creates innovations of new festoon lighting works.This paper mainly focuses on some typical inheritors of Qinhuai lanterns by interviewing them with the method of folklore fieldwork. It studies plenty of literatures and summarizes the general situation of Qinhuai lanterns’ inheritance from the perspective of artists’ unique creation concepts, new materials used, exquisite craftsmanship adopted, good marketing and organizational management respectively, aimed at understanding the craft innovation adequately. Besides, this paper also discusses the important role innovation plays in the Qinhuai Lanterns’development and then gives some advices concerned.This paper is divided into seven parts:Chapter1is the introduction, which mainly demonstrates the reasons for selecting the topic, as well as the significance, research status, methodology, theory of the paper; Chapter2summarizes the characteristics in different periods during Qinhuai lanterns’ revolution by discussing the origin and development of it; Chapter3analyzes the current situation of lanterns generally from the perspective of Qinhuai lanterns itself and its inheritors; Chapter4mainly introduces the inheritance situation of "Lu’s Lanterns", which is a typical representative of medium and small-sized high-quality lanterns, and studies on its innovations; Chapter5mainly introduces the inheritance situation of "Chen’s Lanterns", which is a typical representative of large and medium-sized high-quality lanterns, and tries to know its performance in the process of marketization; Chapter6gains some tips by combining the case of "Lu’s Lanterns" with that of "Chen’s Lanterns", points out several innovative problems that Qinhuai Lanterns faces during the modernization process, and finally puts forward some innovative suggestions; The last chapter, which’s the conclusion part, summarizes and discusses the whole literature and points a way for Qinhuai Lanterns’ future.This paper mainly concentrates on the reform and innovation activities in "Lu’s Lanterns" and "Chen’s Lanterns" taken by their inheritors, which to some extent contributes to the development of the lanterns. It not only has a guiding function for Qinhuai Lanterns generally, but also has a vital significance to our country’s protection of folk culture.
