George Crumb is one of the prominent American composers in today’s musicworld. Many of his representatives are characterized with his strong personal stylewhich has greatly displayed his amazing talents. In this paper, the author will take“Sonata for solo violoncello” as the objective. This composition is written in1955when Crumb studied inHochschule fuer Musik "Hanns Eisler" Berlin as the FulbrightVisiting Scholar. Crumb dedicated the composition to his mother who is a cellist.“Sonata for solo violoncello” belongs to Crumb’s early works.The author will analyze “Sonata for solo violoncello” from a unique perspectivein this paper. Namely, the composition is considered as a letter that Crumb wrote tohis mother. Based on this idea, the author first gives a brief introduction of thecomposer and his works. The emphasis is on Crumb himself and the background ofwriting “Sonata for solo violoncello”. In chapter II, the author tries to analyze theforms of composition as a whole. Through the detailed research on music structure,harmonies, melody and other elements in creation, a complete framework of thisletter is offered. Then in Chapter III, the author applies a contrast studies on FransHelmerson, QIN Liwei and Pieter Wispelwey’s performances. First, the authoranalyzes the speed, sound and tone of three performances. Then she makes aprofound study on some phrases that have different treatments by three performers,concluding that different treatment has lead to different musical scores. In thesummary part, the author combs and summarizes the discussion on “Sonata for solovioloncello” and the performances from previous chapters. Also, the author getsconclusion of composer’s motivation of creation, in order to provide somesuggestions for players to help them to understand and perform the composition well.
