China has a vast land with various dialects. In different dialectal areas, there exist different phonetic systems. As now more and more Chinese students are learning English at a relatively young age even at the same time of acquiring a dialect, the normal negative transfer from the general "Chinese" to English as is written in the theory of the second language acquisition is not enough to explain the negative transfer in different dialectal areas. Because of the negative influence of mother tongue on English phonetics, students in different dialectal areas cannot avoid the impact of negative transfer of their local accents when they try to learn English phonetics. Although some scholars and experts in China have made researches on the influence of negative transfer of various dialects, there is no one who makes any research or study on the influence of negative transfer of Wuxi dialect which belongs to Wu dialect. In order to improve the ability of oral English of students in Wuxi, it is of great importance for English teachers in Wuxi to study on the negative transfer of Wuxi dialect and seek effective ways to teach English phonetics. There are two questions raised in the thesis:Does Wuxi dialect really have any negative transfer on EFL learners’English phonetics and is there any possible way to solve the problems appearing in the process of English acquisition? This thesis mainly used the theory of negative transfer of language in second language acquisition and the theory of contrastive analysis to investigate the differences of phonetic systems of English and Wuxi dialect. Also, on the basis of theoretical contrast and analysis, the author tries to find ways to overcome the difficulties of learning English phonetics and proposes effective teaching methods to solve the problems by analyzing questionnaires, interviews and audio records.
