In senior middle school, the importance of reading ability is shown in the proportion ittakes in the college entrance examination paper. While, in the traditional teacher-centeredteaching mode, the teacher explains the passage throughout the class and the students justlisten and take notes when necessary. The teacher is the dominant leader and the students arethe passive receivers. In this kind of class, the students just listen, read and write as theteacher told. Therefore, the students are not active in the class with little creativity, which isharmful to the students’ learning enthusiasm and the teaching efficiency. To improve thissituation,the writer attempted to adopt a new teaching mode that is Learning Plan GuidedTeaching. Learning plan is different from teaching plan and is a plan for the students to learnaccording to. And this teaching mode is a mode which employs the learning plans as carriers,the teacher as the dominant and the students as the subjects. The students study by themselveswith the help of the teacher and the instruction of learning plans.The author, basing on the Constructivism, Humanism and Autonomous learning theories,conducted an experimental study lasting for a term, aiming to solve the questions: Can thelearning plan guided teaching enhance the students reading achievements? Can the learningplan improve the students’ autonomous learning awareness and ability? In the experiment, theauthor chose the two parallel classes she taught, totally90students, as control class andexperimental class, with the questionnaires, interview and tests as experimental instruments.After a semester’s teaching with traditional mode in control class and new teaching mode inexperimental class, the author collected valid data. The T-test of the data from pre and posttests was done by SPSS21.0. the result of tests showed that the reading achievements of ECis obviously better than those of CC. Combining the qualitative data from the interviews andthe quantitative data from the questionnaires and tests, the writer came to the conclusion thatthe learning plan guided teaching mode is effective in enhancing the students’ autonomouslearning awareness and improve their reading ability. The author also found that the learningplan stimulates the students’ interest in English and English reading, leads the students toform the learning habits of previewing and motivates the students’ reflection on learning. At the end of the thesis, the author lay out some suggestions on the effectiveapplication of the learning plan, hoping to help other teachers who adopt the teaching mode.With the help of learning plan, the students, as the center of learning, do somepreparations ahead of the class, take part in the class activities actively and try to explore anddiscover the knowledge by themselves in class. After class, they reflect on their learning. Thelearning plan cultivates the initiative and creativity of the students and enables them to knowwhat to learn, how to learn by themselves and what they have learnt. The training ofautonomous learning with learning plan will lay a foundation for their life-long learning.
