The Costume Fashion Of Literati In Southern Dynasties

Wei Jin and the Northern and Southern Dynasties is Chinese political upheaval,society dark, continual war, however is a period of the multinational fusion, whose diversified culture created a spiritual history on very free and open. Costume in this period was rather representative and got essence from various nations that inherited past traditions and break new grounds for the future, which presented creative, free,open spirit of the time.In Wei Jin, the celebrities such as Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove’s admiration of the nature, personality spirit of being completely informal, and blouse with large sleeves, kerchief, sitting with legs stretched out and hair disheveled,being naked, which not only had much influence on the costume fashion of literati in Southern dynasties, but also promoted the open costume fashion in Tang Dynasty.This article aims at analyzing the costume fashion of literati in Southern dynasties from Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove and Rongqiqi’s Brick of Portrait unearthed in Nanjing Xishanqiao, for this Brick of Portrait offering us commendable material object. A conclusion of both the costume fashion of literati and the political, economic,cultural origin behind this costume fashion in Southern dynasties could be drawn through collecting and organizing information in abundance and doing research form Iconology with combination of Archeology, History, Culturology, Folklore etc. This paper concluded three kinds of costume fashion for literati in Southern dynasties: 1.Being slovenly, disheveled and unembellished. 2. Being undressed and completely informal. 3. Being whitewashed and scented.Firstly, this paper introduced the situation and historical background of Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove and Rongqiqi’s Brick of Portrait unearthed in Nanjing Xishanqiao through the investigation on basic information of Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove and Rongqiqi’s Brick of Portrait. Secondly, to make a research on the form and historical origin of characters’ dress and adornment in the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove and Rongqiqi’s Brick of Portrait that include the blouse, kerchief,guanjiaoji etc. Thirdly, to analyze the costume fashion of literati in Southern dynasties and the origin or cause behind this costume fashion.
