On The Practices And Features Of Men’s Skirts’ Design

There’re differences between menswear and womenswear while ‘clothing’ was born in human history. The gap between menswear and womenswear was changing over time, sometimes it expanded and sometimes it shrank into an ambiguous status.With the development of society, clothing serves to mark a definite distinction between the sexes while the Western cultures became the mainstream fashion cultures.The word ‘skirt’ was defined to be a garment that could be worn by female only.However, the social roles of male and female are blending and the traditional relevance between sexes and clothing is gradually broken. Men in skirts are generating more interests around the world. Men’s skirts are getting more attention in fashion industry and social life although they are still not widely accepted. It is necessary to study the generation and development of men wearing skirts.The main perspective of this paper is based on the history of clothing in Western and Non-Western cultures. This paper should begin by generalizing representative men’s skirt styles around the world according to the timeline, then analyze the subcultural styles and their influence. It also shows appreciating and analyses of men’s skirts’ designs of designers in contemporary era by contrasting and analyzing information in letters and graphics, then summaries the features of men’s skirts’ design. In the end will be the practice of designing a men’s skirt collection based on the theories which was concluded in this paper.Through the above process of research, this paper proposes the following perspectives: The skirt is independent of gender, there is still much room for development of the men’s skirts’ design.
