With the rapid development of China’s economy, commercial buildings in our country are also experiencing rapid growth. According to some statistics, among commercial buildings, large shopping malls’ average energy consumption is2times as that of ordinary commercial buildings, and10to20times as that of residential buildings. Therefore, the study on energy saving of large shopping malls is necessary. Based on the background of China’s energy waste and environmental pollution, combined with the energy distribution in construction industry, and started from the’building-climate’ relationship in passive design, this thesis explored passive design strategies of large shopping malls in Taiyuan city. This study analyzes problems from the following three aspects. Firstly, it is the introduce of passive design and some related theory studies. In this part, some domestic and abroad researches about passive design are summarized, while the purpose and meaning, process and methods as well as the basic content of passive design are explained. Secondly, it is about energy saving methods of traditional architecture in Shanxi Province. By the influence of local climate and culture, traditional buildings evolved a ecological energy saving system, which is still of great reference to the contemporary’s design. So this part analyzed the courtyard and cave buildings in Shanxi, and explored energy-saving strategies which are suitable for Taiyuan’s climate. Thirdly, it is the survey about ten large shopping malls selected in Taiyuan, and the comparisons from the passive design perspective. Then, based on above analysis, the principles of passive design for Taiyuan malls are elaborated from four aspects, including orientation, size, buffer space and important component. Finally, this thesis conclude some passive design strategies for shopping malls in Taiyuan:(1) the optimum orientation is the South West10°;(2) strictly control the shape coefficient;(3) buffer space should be based on the different seasons, and the indoor environment need to be regulated respectively;(4) a green roof is suggested;(5) more windows to south, less windows to north and west, strengthen thermal performance of the material of windows;(6) use thermal insulation materials as walls;(7) according Taiyuan’s sunshine incident angle to design the shading system, use adjustable sun shield as external shading and double-layer glass curtain wall as internal shading are suggested.Nowadays, confronted with resource shortage, buildings’energy-saving is considered as very important, while passive design is the most basic step in the entire energy-saving design. Besides, passive design is easily accepted by architects. What’s more, it’s effect can’t replaced by other methods. Therefore, this study could enrich the theoretical research in the field, as well as provide some references for energy-saving design of shopping mall in Taiyuan.
