Based on the requirement of enterprise product development, computer simulation is applied to the research and development process of muffler. The experimental means was adopted to verify the design effect to achieve the design objectives. The research method also improved the design accuracy and developing efficiency of truck muffler.This paper analyzed the current situation of muffler design and analysis methods, explained the elementary noise elimination principle of muffler elements, with detailed comparison of each muffler performance. At the same time, it also described how to determine all the elementary sizes and parameters during the design process, and designed the basic technical proposal of light duty truck muffler. Resistant muffler was chosen in the proposal, and complex structures such as the expand cavity, the Helmholtz muffler etc. are used internally, mainly for the elimination of intermediate and low frequency noise of engine exhaust system.Based on the structural design, GT-Power was applied to the simulating calculation of the muffler performance and got the parameters of transmission loss and insertion loss. Then referring to the analysis results, changes and improvements would be made to the basic design proposal and finally came to the detailed design program which could meet the requirements and satisfy the design target. After this, the engineering drawings would be made and qualified physical prototype would be manufactured by suppliers. After the testing of all the main performances of muffler assembly, the consistent comparison analysis would be done together with the simulation results.The qualified sample pieces finally would be used for vehicle assembly. Testing and analysis about the vehicle noise would be conducted through the testing system and software. Whether this muffler would satisfy the related vehicle performance requirements after assemble would be analyzed according to the results.With the method of integrating the simulation analysis and experiment, the muffler design method could meet the requirements of the actual vehicle engineering. Meanwhile, this could facilitate to shorten the developing period, reduce the developing cost and meet the predicted product parameter demands.
