Objective: The aim of this retrospective cohort study is to assess whethertechnetium-99methylene diphosphonate (99Tc-MDP) treatment associates withhypertension in patients with rheumatism and find out risk factors which may relate tohypertension within the patients.Methods: Records of164patients initially diagnosed as Rheumatoid arthritis,Ankylosing spondylitis, Osteoarthritis or Osteoporosis were retrospectively reviewed(March2012to November2013, Fujian Medical University, Department ofHematology Rheumatology) and divided into99Tc-MDP treatment group andnon-treatment group. The clinical data was collected, including basic information,hypertension history, blood pressure changing and laboratory results. To analyzestatistical differences of blood pressure level between two groups and to assess riskfactors which may relate to hypertension by non-conditional Logistic regression.Results: In99Tc-MDP treatment group, eight of69cases with hypertension(11.6%),two cases are probable compared with six cases are possible in causality assessmentof adverse drug reactions association, and three cases with history of hypertensioncompared with five cases without. In non-treatment group, seven of69cases withhypertension(7.37%), and two cases with history of hypertension, compared withfive cases without. Through non-conditional Logistic regression, we found thathigh-density lipoprotein cholesterol is a protective factor, while age, body mass indexand triglycerides are the independent risk factors for elevation of blood pressure. TheOR values are0.077(95%CI0.007~0.867),2.171(95%CI1.094~4.309),2.775(95%CI1.127~6.833),2.453(95%CI0.857~7.023) respectively.Conclusion: There is no enough evidence to believe that hypertension associates withadverse reactions of99Tc-MDP in rheumatics, while the independent risk factors forelevation of blood pressure are age, body mass index, triglycerides and the protectivefactor is high-density lipoprotein cholesterol.
