Objective: To make the application of SurePath liquid-based cytology in thediagnosis of bladder urothelial carcinoma, with the comparative analysis to conventionalcytospins form sensitivity and specificity of each, we assess the significance of SurePathliquid-based cytology in diagnosis of bladder urothelial carcinoma. Methods: From June2012to December2013,305patients at elevated risk forbladder urothelial carcinoma due to factors such as history of smoking or symptomsincluding hematuria and dysuria were included in this prospective study. Each patientprovided three serial voided urine samples each for SurePath liquid-based cytology andconventional cytospins examination prior to urethrocystoscopy. Systematic diagnosis wascarried out in all patients, and the data were statistical analysis according to pathologyresult. The sensitivity and specificity of SurePath liquid-based cytology and conventionalcytospins were determined.Result: There is feasibility in the application of SurePath liquid-based cytology in thediagnosis of bladder urothelial carcinoma, and it has a higher sensibility.83patients werediagnosed with bladder urothelial carcinoma. The sensitivities of the SurePath liquid-basedcytology and conventional cytospins were60.2%and32.5%, respectively (P<0.001). Ineach stage and grade of bladder urothelial carcinoma, the sensitivity of SurePathliquid-based cytology is superior to conventional cytospins. In the non-muscle invasivebladder cancer, the sensitivity of the SurePath liquid-based cytology is higher thanconventional cytospins, the difference is statistical significance (P<0.001). The sensitivityof the SurePath liquid-based cytology is also higher than conventional cytospins in the GIIbladder urothelial carcinoma (P=0.0012). The specificity of the SurePath liquid-basedcytology was95.9%compared with98.2%for conventional cytospins (P=0.085).Conclusion: The SurePath liquid-based cytology can be used to process urinespecimen. And the SurePath liquid-based cytology is superior to conventional cytospins insensitivity while its specificity is also high in the diagnosis of bladder urothelial carcinoma. The SurePath liquid-based cytology would substitute for conventional cytospins to be aneffective parameter for early detection of bladder cancer.
