| Background and Objective: To explore the efficacy as well as theside effects of adding on mirtazapine in the treatment of negativesymptoms in schizophrenia. Methods: Evidence-based relevant databasesat home and abroad up to October2012were systematically searched andrandomized placebo-controlled trails being published on mirtazapinecombined with antipsychotics in the treatment of negative symptoms ofschizophrenia were collected for meta-analysis. Results:8randomizedcontrolled trails were included in this review. The effective rate (Z=8.12,P<0.00001)and the cure rate(Z=2.64,P=0.008) respectively of adjunctivemirtazapine with conventional antipsychotic medications were statisticallysuperior to those of antipsychotics monotherapy. Moreover, there were alower incidence(P<0.05) of nausea and insomnia but a higher incidence ofdrowsiness(P<0.05) in add-on mirtazapine group, and the rest(P>0.05)of common side effects reported with no statistically significant differencesbetween combination therapy with mirtazapine and antipsychoticsmonotherapy. Conclusion: Mirtazapine in combination with antipsychoticswas effective and safe in treatment of negative symptoms in schizophrenia patients. |
