We summary the the etiology and pathogenesis of post-infectious cough (PIC) and clear that airway hyperresponsiveness plays an important role in the pathogenesis of PIC which is associated with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory of "wind induced cough". We try to explain the airway hyperresponsiveness from the TCM medical theory. Cough of PIC is hard to recovery, not only external wind but only endogenous wind exists in the course of PIC, is different from the simple pathogenesis of "wind induced cough". We put forward that the pathogenesis of PIC maybe is"wind pathogen stayed in lung, external wind evoked endogenous wind" and the treatment should focus on "dispersing external wind, dispelling endogenous wind" and it has just explained why pure simple dispersing wind sometimes can not work, and we summarize Qufeng-Xuanfei decoction which is great effective in treatment of PIC.We analysised Clinical data based on PIC general situation, main symptoms, the syndrome modes and the traditional Chinese drugs used commonly in treatment of PIC by mentor Zhu Jia. It shows that PIC is more common in women than men, winter and spring has slightly higher incidence, morbidity crowd mainly concentrate in young and middle-aged, the wind pathogen exists in72cases, accounted for67.3%of all patients, including wind pathogen stayed in lung, a total of41cases, accounted for57%of wind pathogen. The symptoms of dry cough, pharyngeal itching, paroxysmal cough, heavier in day than in night and aggravates when stimulated by abnormal flavour appears frequently in PIC. Professor Zhu Jia choose drugs of dispelling and dispersing wind pathogen more often with radix adenophorae to reinforce Qi and Yin in the treatment of PIC. It is important to disperse and dispel wind when treating PIC confirming for the etiology and pathogenesis of "wind pathogen stayed in lung, external wind evoked endogenous wind".Experimental study, we simulate the process of PIC by intraperitoneal injection of streptococcus pneumoniae in mice, and then determinated cough count of mice in each group, observed bronchial lung tissue pathology to confirme successful PIC model mice.On the basis of successful replicated model, the role of Qufeng-Xuanfei decoction in cough of PIC model mice and in TRPV1existing in the periphery of C-fibers which representing the cough sensitivity. TRPV1mRNA and TRPV1were detected by RT-PCR and Westernblot respectively to explore the targeting point of Qufeng-Xuanfei decoction in treating PIC. The results show that:(1)Qufeng-Xuanfei decoction can obviously reduce the PIC model mice cough;(2) Qufeng-Xufei decoction reduces the PIC model mice cough sensitivity to reduce airway hyperresponsiveness in treating PIC by downregulating activity of TRPV1and PIC can be effective cured in clinic by Qufeng-Xuanfei decoction.
