A Survey Of Smoking Status Among Male Outpatients In Weifang Community Health Service Center Of Shanghai

Department of General Practice, Zhongshan Hospital Fudan University, ChinaObjective:To understand the smoking prevalence and its influencing factors of the male outpatients in Weifang Community Health Service Center. Analyze the partial results of the relevant factors, in order to provide evidence for community-based smoking cessation interventions in the future.Methods:805male outpatients in Weifang Community Health Service Center were selected to answer the questionnaire.Results:The average age of the male outpatients in Weifang Community Health Service Center was62.46years old. The patients between60-75years old accounted for69.4%.72%of the total outpatients visited the center for the main purpose of chronic disease follow-up and12.3%went to the clinic for new onset of treatment. The majority of patients believed that smoking and second-hand smoke were harmful to health, accounted for97.4%and91.7%respectively. The current smoking rate was44.8%. The patients between45-60years old had the highest smoking rate which is69.4%. The average starting smoking age was21.6years old, among them15-20years old accounted for62%. The most common reason of starting smoking was curious (50.7%). The most common source of the first cigarette was their own, accounted for41.8%and the most common amount of smoking is10-20per day, accounted for45.4%. Approximately72.6%of the surveyed population showed that habit was the reason why they smoke continuously. The ratio of the survey population who had received cigarettes is80.3%. The patients who had received smoking cessation advice from friend or colleague accounted for36.6%, from doctor accounted for65.1%, from family accounted for73.1%.46.3%of the smokers in the treatment tried to quit smoking. The longest average time to quit smoking is379.09days.41.3%of the population had quited smoking for less than one month. The population who had quited smoking for from one month to six months (including six months) accounted for37.7%. The most common reason of smoking cessation was due to health or disease (50.3%). Most patients had quited smoking by self-intervention, accounted for85.6%. We surveyed the quit attitude of the population that the patient who never considered to quit smoking or had thought of smoking cessation were the majority, accounted for45.4%and34.3%respectively. The patient who was ready to quit or had started smoking cessation only accounted for20.2%. The ratio of patients who knew that smoking cessation could be successful was67.6%. In treatment process, doctors who had asked about patient’s smoking status accounted for63.2%and who had encouraged patients to quit smoking accounted for60.9%. Furthermore, we investigated the smokers’view on the smoking cessation clinic. Patients who thought that it would be helpful accounted for50.4%.45.7%of the population would visit the smoking cessation clinic. The Nicotine Dependence Scale survey showed that the patient who was high nicotine dependence accounted for26.6%.Discussion:Communities cessation interventions should be multi-pronged approached which was including the increase of awareness of smoking dangers and improve the awareness of tobacco control in medical staff. Doctors should fully understand the patient’s difficulties of smoking cessation and provide different help on the basis of smokers’different quit stage. The medical staff should help the patient to establish the confidence of smoking cessation and provide the smoking cessation clinic.
