The Effect Of Timpanoplasty On Tinnitus And Analysis Of Possible Influencing Factors

Object:This study was to clinical analysis of the effect of tympanoplasty on tinnitus in patients with chronic otitis media (COM), and to evaluate changes in tinnitus following tympanoplasty in relation to audiologic outcome, otologic drills, disease types and lesion degree of COM.Methods:Medical records were reviewed for106patients with COM who underwent tympanoplasty between March2012and January2013. The tinnitus patients completed THI, VAS about loudness of tinnitus and The Tinnitus Severity And Curative Effect Evaluation Scale before and3months after tympanoplasty, in order to know tinnitus intolerance and severity. Upon3months following, all patients received pure tone audiometry again. We analyse the data with Paired t test, Student’s t test and Fisher’s exact test by stata software.Results:The Prevalence of tinnitus in patients with chronic otitis media was46%, there were40patients completed THI, VAS about loudness of tinnitus and The Tinnitus Severity And Curative Effect Evaluation Scale before and after tympanoplasty, in order to know tinnitus intolerance and severity.82.5%of patients had improvement or elimination of tinnitus after tympanoplasty. The mean score of postoperative tinnitus intolerance to tinnitus was significantly reduced from preoperative scores (p<0.05). One patient displayed newly developed tinnitus after surgery. Postoperative air conduction hearing improved more in the group that tinnitus was significant improvement, the difference was statistically significant (p<0.05). However, otologic drills, disease types and lesion degree of COM with tinnitus had improvement and elimination were no significant difference (p>0.05).Conclusions:Following tympanoplasty, most patients experienced a reduction in tinnitus and restored hearing, with surgery perceived as an important contributory factor.
