The Application Of Mathematical Methods In The Study Of Chinese Medicine

Since time immemorial the mathematical technique has always played a significant role in the research of Chinese Medicine. Marx once said that “Science, only in the successful application of mathematics, could be considered to be the perfect situation.” With the development of society and the advances in technology, mathematics itself also develops constantly. The new mathematical concepts and branches continually appear. Correspondently, new mathematical techniques are generated and produced, such as probability theory, mathematical statistics and fuzzy mathematics. If these mathematical techniques are applied to the research of Chinese Medicine, the latter will become more mathematical and quantitative. This point has drawn the attention of more and more scholars.This paper explores the influences that mathematics has on Chinese Medicine, the mathematical models in Chinese Medicine and the application of mathematical technique in Chinese Medicine. The result is as follows:This paper mainly achieved the following tasks:1) Discussed the impact of ancient mathematics and modern mathematics on traditional Chinese medicine. Firstly, by quoting the statements that contains numbers or reflects the mathematical thoughts from ancient books of traditional Chinese medicine, this paper illustrates the effect of ancient mathematics on Chinese medicine only confined to some numbers and simple mathematical ideas. Secondly, by illustrating, this paper demonstrates and explains the impact of modern mathematics on Chinese medicine is enormous.2) Studied the mathematical model in the traditional Chinese medicine. This paper describes the definition and classification of Mathematical model as well as modeling methods and procedures. And then, by way of example-- establishment of mathematical model of four properties of medicinal herb, this paper elaborates the effect of using mathematical model in the study of traditional Chinese medicine can not be ignored.3) Studied the application of several mathematical methods in the research of traditional Chinese medicine. Firstly, the author states the definition, methods and procedures of orthogonal design, and verifies the superiority of orthogonal design method through the example of polysaccharide extraction rate. Secondly, this paper elaborates concepts and basic ideas of cluster analysis, regression analysis and fuzzy mathematics, and demonstrates several widely-used applications by illustrating. Finally, a brief overview of several other mathematical methods applied in the field of traditional Chinese medicine study will be described in this paper.
