Objective:With the improvement of living standards in recent years, the proportion of the elderly with coronary heart disease increase. As the rapid development of modern medical technology, coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) both improve the quality of life of patients and reduce the cardiovascular accidents. For a long time, the comparison of CABG and PCI in trauma and risk to the elderly is controversial. There is a lack of systematic study in the postoperative long-term efficacy and quality of life of the elderly. In recent years, the improve of anesthesia, surgical techniques and especially minimally invasive surgical techniques lead to an increasing number of elderly patients who can stand the trauma caused by coronary artery bypass grafting. Although long-term life expectancy is relatively limited after surgical operation, the improvment in quality of life is still attractive. The aim of this study is to evaluate the midterm functional quality of life in senile patients after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) and percutaneous coronary intervention(PCI). Materials and Methods:From February1,2003to June31,2012,117consecutive patients above age70underwent CABG and115consecutive patients underwent PCI. Using the Karnofsky Performance score and Barthel Index, patients were evaluated for functional autonomy, living disposition, and leisure activity by a single telephone interview. Results:Mean age of senile patients undergoing CABG was73.4years (range70to87years). Actuarial survival at two years in CABG Group was82.9%,while the PCI group was80.0%. The average Barthel score of CABG group is75.6and PCI group is65.5. Among survivors in CABG group,80.4%were autonomous, and79%have some exercise. For the PCI group,47.8%were autonomous and only40.2%do have exercise. There were statistical differences between CABG and PCI group in exercise. Conclusions:For the senile patients(≥70years) coronary artery bypass graft provide them with obvious promotion of Ventricular dysfunction and an excellent quality of life in futurity.
