The Influence Of Personality And Marital Quality On The Female Patients With Depression

Objectives To explore the influence of personality, marriage quality on female patients with depression.Methods The questionnaire of demographic variables, Eysenck’s Personality Questionnaire Short Scale(EPQ- RSC), Locke-Wallace Marital Adjustment and Selfrating Depression Scale(SDS) were used to survey 139 cases of female patients with depression(the study group) and 139 cases of healthy women(the control group).Results 1 In the EPQ – RSC, the scores of the study group were higher on the dimension of neuroticism and psychoticism, lower on the dimension of introversion-extraversionin and deception than the control group(P<0.001). The scores of the study group on marital quality were lower than the control group(P<0.001), but higher on SDS( P<0.001). 2 In the study group, SDS scores were significantly positively correlated with scores on the dimension of neuroticism and psychoticism(r=0.578, 0.472. all P<0.01), but significantly negatively correlated with scores on the dimension of introversion-extraversionin and the marital quality(r=-0.427, r=-0.539. all P<0.01). 3 In the study group, there were significant differences on SDS scores among ages, education backgrounds, marital status, marriageable ages, physiological periods or not, monthly incomes, first-episode depression /relapse(P<0.01). 4 In the study group, hierarchical regression analysis showed that the dimensions of introversion-extraversionin, neuroticism, psychoticism, and the scores of marital quality entered the regression equation(all P<0.05) after controlling the demographic variables. 5 The interaction between marital quality and neuroticism was significant(β=-0.163, P<0.01). In the group of higher scores on the neuroticism dimension, marital quality could be used to significantly predict female depression(β=-0.503, t=-3.591, P<0.01), but not in the group of lower scores(β=-0.263, t=-1.090, P>0.05).Conclusions 1 Compared with healthy women, the personality of female patients with depression tends to introversion, and higher degrees of neuroticism or psychoticism;Sound personality and good marriage quality are important to reduce depressive degrees of female patients with depression. 2 Marital quality has significantly negative prediction effect on female depression, neuroticism has significant moderating effects on the relationship between marriage quality and female depression.
