Objective: To investigate the level change of serum vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) pre- and pos-transcatheter arterial chemoembolization(TACE) in patients with primary hepatocellular carcinoma, and analyze the correlation with prognosis. Methods: 40 cases of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma undergoing TACE treatment in our hospatial between January 2013 and June 2013 as studied object. 40 cases of patients with iver cirrhosis and another 40 healthly individuals were selected as the control groups. Serum VEGF levels of Pre-treatment and post-treatment 28 d were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA). The correlation between the serum VEGF level and clinic features, AFP and prognostic was studied. Results: The serum VEGF levels in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(418.4±201.2pg/ml) were significantly elevated as compared to those in patients with liver cirrihosis(252.5±113.2pg/ml) and normal controls(148.3 ± 65.9pg/ml), with statistical significance(t=4.839, 10.895,P all<0.05). The serum VEGF levels had no obvious relationship with clinic features(P all>0.05). The post-treatment serum VEGF levels were significantly higher than the pre-treatment level in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma undergoing TACE(t=3.333, P<0.01). The serum post-treatment serum VEGF levels had no obvious relationship with AFP and liver function index(P all>0.05). Good therapeutic effects were observed in 26 out of 40 paitents, with the other 14 patients with poor response, and significant difference existed between the two groups of patients concerning levels of serum VEGF on the 28 th day after treatment(P<0.05). Significant correlation existed between variation ratio of VEGF before and after treatment and the deposit of iodized oil in the tumor. Conclusions: The serum VEGF levels in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma are significantly elevated as compared to those in patients with liver cirrihosisand normal controls. The serum VEGF levels have no obvious relationship with clinic features. The serum post-treatment serum VEGF levels have no obvious relationship with AFP and liver function index. VEGF can contribute to the evaluation of the curative effect of TACE.
