ObjectivesTo investigate the effect of low-to-moderate intensity aerobic-resistance training on muscle strength, physical function and quality of life among patients on hemodialysis.MethodsA randomized controlled study was used in this study. 89 patients on hemodialysis were recruited from hemopurification centers of grade 3+ hospital of Zhengzhou City. The patients were randomly divided into two groups: the study group(n=45) and the control group(n=44). The exercise group received low-to-moderate-intensity home-based aerobic training about 30~60 minutes during per time, 3 times a week, and accepted resistance training about 20 minutes during per session, 2 sessions a week, for three months. Aerobic trainning at home such as walking and cycling are alternative for patients, resistance training on upper and lower limbs use the sand bags as the resistance; while the control group only accepted usual care. Outcome measures evaluated were: sit-to-stand-to-sit test, upper arm circumference, handgrip strength, self-reported physical function, the Kidney DiseaseQuestionnaire(KDQ) and Dialysis Patients-perceived Exercise Benefits and Barriers Scale(DPEBBS).Results81 participants finished the whole research process.(1) The results of repetitive measure analysis of variance revealed, the score of DPEBBS improved than the control group, the difference was statistically(F=15.309, P<0.001).(2) The results of repetitive measure analysis of variance revealed, there was a significant improvement in sit-to-stand-to-sit test in exercise group(F=6.526, P=0.013), with the extension of time sit-to-stand-to-sit test in exercise group has a tendency to decrease after intervention(3)The results of repetitive measure analysis of variance revealed that there was a significant improvement in exercise group in self-reported physical function(F = 6.070, P=0.016).(4) The results of repetitive measure analysis of variance revealed that there was a significant improvement in upper arm circumference in exercise group(F=68.397, P<0.001).There were no significant difference in handgrip(P>0.05).(5) The results of repetitive measure analysis of variance revealed that there was a significant improvement in quality of life in exercise group, the difference was statistically(F=4.441, P=0.038).ConclusionThe effect of aerobic-resistance trainning can significantly increase lower limb muscle strength, enhance the exercise health belief and improve self-evaluation of physical function and quality of life in patients on hemodialysis. Aerobic and resistance taining is helpful to patients on hemodialysis. We can expand it for hemodialysis caring at hemopurification centers.
