ObjectTo evaluate the nutriture of school children in Longxi,Gansu who have practicing in the students’ nutrition improvement plan, and we studied the effect of nutrition intervention on the children by offering pure apple juice. The aim of the study is to offer evidence to improve the nutrition status in urban and minority area in Gausu. MethodsInvestigated the nutrients intake status including dietary energy intake, and the biochemical parameter levels including hemoglobin concentration about nutrition of 429 children aged 9-12 in six primary schools in Longxi and divide all the subjects into three groups. Intervention group 1 and 2 were provided with 250 ml pure apple juice daily and 250 ml pure apple juice three times per week, respectively. Group with no intervention was used as control group. The nutrients intake levels and the biochemical parameter levels were detected before and after the intervention. Investigated the nutrients intake status such as dietary energy intake and the biochemical parameters level such as hemoglobin concentration about nutrition before and after the study. The complete blood count, BLAP and VA level was evaluated by Mindray BC – 5380, neonatal bone alkaline phosphatase kit and HPLC, respectively. Results 1)The average intakes of energy, protein, VC, Fe, VA were 1739.0kcal, 51.5g, 189.8mg, 23.0mg, 432.5ug RE. All of the nutrients are within the recommended intake range. The average intakes of grains, milk or eggs and meats were 280.4g,293.7g.The intakes of grains, vegetables and milk were within the recommended intake range but the intakes of fruit was below the average intake amount, with an average of only 78.3g per day. 2) Only one of 429 subjects developed anemia, with a morbidity rate of 0.23%. 3) 153 of 429 subjects(35.66%) suffered from vitamin d deficiency. 4)All of the biochemical parameter mean levels about nutrition were within the reference range. 5) The average intakes of daily energy, protein, iron, VC and VA were significantly increased. 6)One person of the subjects of 429 person was suffering from anemia before the intervention and the anemia rate was 0.23%;The same person was suffering from anemia after the intervention and the anemia rate was 0.23%.The overall prevalence of anemia was not statistically significant. The differences of hemoglobin levels before and after the intervention between the groups were not statistically significant. 7) The number of white blood cells, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, red blood cells, platelets were not statistically significant, but the number of basophiles was significantly increased before and after the intervention. 8) Two of 391 persons(0.51%) were developed subclinical vitamin A deficiency and 26 of 429 people were(7.16%) developed suspicious subclinical vitamin A deficiency. No significant decrease of SVAD deficiency rate was observed, but the suspicious SAVD rate was significantly decreased after intervention. 9) 35.56 %(153/429) and 11.6 %(59/429) of subjects develop vitamin D deficiency before and after intervention. No significant change was observed between intervention group 1, group 2 and control group. Surprisingly, the vitamin D deficiency rate was significantly decreased between the intervention group and control group. Conclusions 1)The survey demonstrated that the school children from Longxi had a low chance of developing anemia, but a high chance of suffering from vitamin d deficiency, and the complete blood counts were within the reference range. 2)The survey showed that there is a high prevalence of suspicious SVAD among children in Longxi. After provided pure apple juice in three months, the situation of SVDD and suspicious SVAD has improved, indicating that pure apple juice is a good strategy to improve the life quality of children in poor areas and decrease the micronutrient deficiency.
