With the deepening of globalization, foreign movies, especially English movies, have become popular ininternational communication. Therefore, audiovisual translation is gaining more and more importance. As aneffective medium of mass communication, it delivers information to the audience mainly via aural and visualchannels. There are two forms of audiovisual translation: dubbing and subtitling. At present, dubbing has almostbeen replaced by subtitling for its low-cost and time-saving features. With the development of the internettechnology and the emergence of fansub groups, a multitude of foreign movies and TV series have beentranslated into Chinese on the internet. In recent years, the translating of public lectures of world famousuniversities has become popular. However, few researches on fansubbing from academic perspectives have beenconducted. Therefore, the research of this thesis is of practical significance.Reception aesthetics has put the reader at a significant place in the process of literature reception for thefirst time in history and it emphasizes reader s role and status in the forming of meaning of a literary work.Based on reception aesthetics, the author studies the application of creative treason to the fansubbing of thepopular American TV sitcom The Big Bang Theory. By doing this, the author tries to find out how and when thetranslators apply creative treason during translation as well as its restrictions in audiovisual translation. This thesis consists of six parts. Chapter one is an introduction to the research background and significanceof the study. In Chapter Two, the author makes a brief introduction to subtitling and fansubbing and reviews theprevious studies on audiovisual translation. Chapter Three is the theoretical framework of the thesis. In this part, the author discusses the emergence, development and application of reception aesthetics. In Chapter Four, threeresearch questions are raised and the research methodology and process are included. In Chapter Five, the authorstudies the application of creative treason in the fansubbing of the popular American TV sitcom The Big BangTheory from the perspective of reception aesthetics. In the last part, the author draws a conclusion, in which themain findings and restrictions of present research as well as some suggestions for future researches are included.Through the research and analysis, the author draws the following conclusions: in audiovisual translation, inorder to produce a translated version that can be appreciated and accepted by the target audience, translators canapply creative treason via addition, omission, deliberate mistranslation and individualized translation. However, irresponsible betrayal of the source text must be avoided, especially when applying deliberate mistranslation, thetranslator should be careful and bear in mind that it is only used to deal with the untranslatability, or to achievespecial effects. The application of creative treason requires translators should not only be excellent at both sourceand target languages, but also have a good command of the cultures. What is more, as it is the movie or TV series that they translate, their sense of beauty and creative thinking are also required.
