On The Creative Treason Of Fansub Group From The Perspective Of Reception Aesthetics

After the “Culture Turn” of translation studies,scholars adopt multiple perspectives in their studies of film translation,such as the form and features of subtitle translation,the strategies of subtitle translation and the theories guiding subtitle translation.Previous studies,however,are mainly based on example analysis and summary and empirical approaches are rare.This thesis,adopting not just theoretical discussion and example analysis but also an empirical approach(questionnaire),studies film subtitle translation under the reception theory,exploring whether fan subtitle translator's “creative treason” exerts a positive impact on film's spreading.Firstly,inspired by the theory of medio-translatology initiated by Xie Tianzhen in China,this thesis maintains that the essence of subtitle translation is a “creative treason”.Secondly,based on the reception theory,and supported by several translation quality assessment models(Reiss' s model,House's model,Si Xianzhu's model,and Li Tangjia's model),a questionnaire research has been designed to investigate the degree of audience's acceptance of the subtitle translations of fansub group with some ways of creative treason.And then,based on the questionnaire analysis,this paper points out the differences between official subtitle translators and fan subtitle translators.Based on this analysis the paper makes a case study of fan subtitle translators' translation practice of “creative treason,” explicating “adding,omission,deliberate mistranslation and individualized translation”.According to analysis of the feedback of questionnaire,this paper safely concludes that the creative treason of fan subtitle translation does have positive impact on film's spreading,which means the majority of respondents(audiences)can accept the creative treason and understand the film through the subtitle translation of this practice.In summary,this research not only furthers the research on the creative treason of the subtitle translation but also is beneficial to the practice of subtitle translation and its intercultural spreading.
