| In January28,2012, when The Economist launched a new weeklysection, which devoted exclusively to China, the first new country sectionsince the introduction of a section about the United States following theevents at Pearl Harbor in1942. The more coverage of China reflects therising of China in the world economy. The Economist tries to put a focusmore on social change, on the lives of ordinary Chinese people who aregoing through this. To acquire a better understanding of the nationalimage building of China in The Economist, quantitative content analysisis conducted to analyze the national image of China portrayed in the newChina section, and examines the way how the national image is formed.The findings of this study demonstrate The Economist is neutral overall,and pays great attention to China politics, economy, social issues, humanrights, and ethnicity. Different topics of coverage change over time, andmultiple sources are cited to represent their news stories. The Economistexhibits different preferences in coverage of certain topics anddemonstrates conspicuous news tendency. |
