As the most representative work of Mark Twain, The Adventures of HuckleberryFinn is regarded as one of the world classics and has won wide popularity in Chinathrough different versions. The profound thematic meaning and distinctive aestheticvalue of this novel lie not only in the message it conveys but also in the forms of theirexpressions. Thus, studies on this novel and on its translation should take the author’srefined linguistic forms into consideration. However, previous researches of itstranslation have been mainly confined to intuitive analyses and generalimpressionistic evaluations under frameworks like Functional Equivalence, SkoposTheory, etc. With foregrounding as its theoretical basis, this thesis is an attempt to make acomparative study on two different Chinese versions of The Adventures ofHuckleberry Finn from a combined perspective of linguistics and literary criticism todig out the linguistic features of the original and their reproductions in the twoversions, so as to testify the feasibility of foregrounding theory in literary translationespecially in fictional translation. Focusing on deviations and overregularities in thenovel, the discussion of the two versions has been mainly carried out at thephonological level, graphological level, lexical level, grammatical level and semanticlevel. Through analysis, it proved that manifesting the integration of forms andcontent, foregrounding theory is a useful tool for literary analysis and a touchstone fortranslation criticism; the application of foregrounding theory in translation studiesenriches translation theories and provides a new perspective to guide translationpractice. Therefore, translators should try to retain the foregrounding features of thesource text to the utmost under the precondition of rendering accurate meaning.
