This is a report on the translation of The Light Between Oceans, a suspense novel. Theauthor depicts a lighthouse keeper who lives a monotonous yet peaceful life with hiswife on a small island. They do not have any children, but their life is totally changedby a baby and a dead body in a boat washed ashore. As a light house keeper, he isobliged to report the dead man and return the baby, but his wife begs him to keep thechild. They finally make the wrong choice: to bury the man and keep the baby, whichcauses a series of accidents and a tragic ending.As a literary text, it was written in beautiful language with attractive plots.During the creation of the novel, large amount of rhetorical devices are used in thetext to create special stylistic effects.These devices play a very important role in theportrayal of characters, description of environment and development ofplots,contributing to an indispensable part of the authorial style. Therefore, this reportwill focus on these rhetorical phenomena and analyze their stylistic effect by using thetheories of stylistics. Based on the analysis, examples will be presented to illustratehow to reproduce these stylistic effects in the target texts. This report contains thefollowing parts: the introduction of the book and the author; the description of thewhole translationprocess; the stylistic analysis of the rhetorical devices, the retainingof the stylistic effects by employing different translation strategies.The report draws a conclusion that in rendering literary works, translators willnot only convey the meaning of the original text, but also reproduce the style.Rhetorical devices, as a significant technique in creating stylistic effects, shouldreceive great attention of the translator. In the process of translation, he must figureout the intention of the author in the choice of different rhetorical devices and analyzethe corresponding stylistic effects they bring. On that basis, the translator canbetterreproduce these effects in the target text by flexibly adopting different translationstrategies.
