A Report On E-C Translation Of Novel Rhetorical Devices Under The Guidance Of Functional Equivalence Theory

As a kind of language art,rhetoric is an effective paragraph to enhance the effect of language expression.The use of rhetoric will make the sentence or even the whole article colorful.With the continuous development of language science,people are studying rhetoric from a wider perspective and at a wider level.The study of translation of rhetoric has aroused strong interests among scholars.They generally believe that if the translation of rhetoric in the text is accurate,and the degree of completion of the translation has been greatly improved.But at the same time,some rhetoric with cultural background also bring difficulties and interference to translators,which makes the study of rhetorical translation of great value.This thesis chooses the Prologue,Chapter one and parts of Chapter two of V.C.Andrew’s House of Secrets as the source text,and applies Nida’s functional equivalence theory as the theoretical guidance.This book belongs to the popular fiction,with frequent use of rhetorical devices.In the specific research process,rhetoric is divided into lexical stylistic devices,syntactical stylistic devices and phonetic stylistic devices with reference to Mr.Lv Xu’s rhetoric classification method.Due to the lack of phonetic stylistic devices in the source text,this paper selects the translation of lexical stylistic devices and syntactical stylistic devices for research.After perusing the original text,the researcher finds that simile,metaphor,analogy and personification are the four most frequently used lexical stylistic devices and parallelism,climax and anastrophe are the three most frequently used syntactical stylistic devices.Through the detailed analysis of these different rhetorical devices,this paper illustrates how to achieve functional equivalence in the translation of rhetoric in novels.This paper proposes that literal translation,conversion,amplification and free translation can be adopted to better achieve functional equivalence when it comes to the translation of lexical stylistic devices.When it comes to the translation of syntactical stylistic devices,literal translation,free translation,inversion,omission and amplification can be used to better achieve functional equivalence.Literal translation can retain original information,rhetorical effect and cultural color.However,conversion,amplification,omission,inversion and free translation will be more suitable if literal translation cannot effectively convey the original information.However,no matter what translation method is used,the final purpose of the translation of novel rhetoric is to make the narration concise and vivid,the characters vividly portrayed,and the emotions fully expressed.What’s more,the translation can help the target readers appreciate literary works better and generate similar reactions with the source text readers in the process of reading.Through the study of this paper,hoping to provide some references for the study of translation of rhetorical devices.
