This thesis analyzes the translation of Three Hundred Pomes by Professor XuYuangchong under the guidance of the creative treason, trying to prove that Tangpoems are of different translatability degrees and the creative treason provides a newpoint of view on poetry translation and a new guidance for literary translation.With communications between different countries growing rapidly, thecommunication of different cultures becomes more and more important. The brilliantculture of china attracts many foreign scholars. As a precious of China’s long history,the traditional Chinese poetry is the great achievement of the wisdom and thecreativity of us Chinese people. The Tang poems are the most famous ones in thetraditional poetry. The Tang poems are the most famous for their various themes andgreat quantity. Many Tang poems have won high praise among people both at homeand abroad. The Tang poems are the heritage of the whole world as well as China.Many scholars home and abroad have devoted their time to introducing the Tangpoems to the western world by translating them into English and they have achievedgreat progress in this aspect.The translation of Tang poems has a long history, but because of the typicalcharacteristics of Tang poems, a lot of difficulties emerge in the translation process ofTang poems, such as the rhythms, the sentence structures and so on. How toovercome these difficulties and transfer the distinct characteristics into Englishbecomes an obstacle faced by the translating Tang poems. There is a constantargument over the translatability of the poetry. Some scholars argue that that thepoetry is untranslatable because of the specific language characteristics and culturaldifferences. At the same time, many scholars have created many excellent translationsof Tang poems, such as Professor Xu Yuanchong’s translation of Three HundredPomes,Which is often quoted and well accepted by scholars. These successfultranslations of Tang poems prove that the Tang poems are translatable even thoughthere are many difficulties in the translation process. The introduction of the creativetreason into the translation process of Tang Poems not only provides a new method for the translators to translate the Tang Poems, but promotes the development ofliterary translation. The creative treason was first put forward by the Frenchsociologist Robert Escarpit. The Chinese scholar Xie tianzhen has introduced thistheory into the translatology and studied this theory in detail. In literary translation,the translators create new works on the basis of the original works. This is second–time creation, so there will be betrayal from the original works, which is inevitablein the translation process because of the existence of the differences also offers a newpoint of view on the literary translation for the translators.On the basis of the previous studies on the translation of Tang poems, this studytries to analyze the application of the creative treason in the English version of ThreeHundred Pomes translated by Xu Yuanchong, proving that the poems are of differentTranslatability degrees and the creative treason provides a new method of translatingTang pomes through the analysis of the samples chosen from Three HundredPomes.At the same time, three are many limitations of the thesis because of the timelimit and other factors, such as the limited selection of the samples, the lack of thevariety of the poetry themes and so on. In the future study of the poetry translation,the researchers may focus on those limitations and make more progress.
