Alice Walker is a dazzling star in the history of American literature. As a black AfricanAmerican herself, she has devoted her life to improving the blacks, especially the blackwomen’s plight. The Color Purple is Alice Walker’s representative work, and the novel nicelyexpresses her pursuit of an equal and harmonious world.Ecofeminism is an important branch of feminism. It not only carries forward the corethought of feminism, but also puts stress on human beings’ respect for the nature environment,the equality between women and men, as well as the inborn harmony between women and thenature environment. Thus, we will build a peaceful and harmonious world.This thesis tries to interpret The Color Purple from the perspective of ecofeminism. Andthrough the analysis of the texts, we can see the harmonious world that Alice Walker wishesto achieve in the novel.This thesis includes five chapters. And it can be divided into four parts: introduction,theoretical foundation, the major analysis, and conclusion.Chapter one, makes a brief introduction to the author Alice Walker, and her writingcharacteristics; the literary status, the synopsis, and the latest findings both at home andabroad of The Color Purple.Chapter two, provides the theoretical foundation of the whole thesis. The background ofecofeminism, and its development in the three waves of feminism, as well as its majorconcerns will be included.Chapter three, analyzes the interrelationship between women and the nature environmentbased on ecofeminism.Chapter four, on the base of ecofeminism, Alice Walker shows us an ideal harmoniousworld which she longs for in The Color Purple, including the harmony between women, theharmony between men, the harmony between women and men, the harmony between thewhite and black, and the harmony between human beings and the nature environment.Chapter five, comes to a conclusion. Emphasizes the similarities between ecofeminismand the pursuit of a harmonious world in The Color Purple.
