A Report On The Translation Of Two On A Tower (Chapters38-41)

This is a report on the translation of Chapters38-41in the novel Two on a Tower, the last part of this novel. Published in1882, Two on a Tower is Hardy’s most complete and daring treatment of the theme of love between two characters of different classes and ages.The report is composed of four parts. The first part includes the selection of the task, brief introduction of the author and the source text, and the translation brief. The second part describes the main theoretical basis, namely, Nord’s Model for Translation-oriented Text Analysis. Based on this model, the author of the present report analyses detail the extratextual factors, intratextual factors and a functional hierarchy of translation problems. The third part is about translation process, including translation preparations, translation difficulties, and the polishing of the translated. The fourth part is the conclusion, including the summary of the translator’s understanding of translation from the task and her limitations. The key points of discussion for the author of the present report are how to translate proper nouns, cultural background knowledge and language features of the ST, especially the characters in the ST.The translation experience has taught me much about literary translation. To complete a perfect literary translation task, it is indispensable not only to know some translation theories, but also to develop the translator’s bilingual competence and cultural comprehension.
